About NNICUPS
Nepean Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Parents Support (NNICUPS) was formed 17 years ago by a group of parents of premature babies. We are a Registered Charity and are based at Nepean Hospital in Penrith. Our members are all volunteers who donate their time, services and hard-earned experiences to a cause they are passionate about and have been personally affected by in some way. Our aim is to support parents before, during and after the birth of their baby, and during their time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
This support takes many forms:
- Fundraising - for the Nepean NICU, helping to provide facilities and equipment to alleviate some of the stress parents are facing. Over the years we have provided breast pumps for mothers to use at home, furniture for the parent areas of the NICU and much needed funds towards vital medical equipment. We were very fortunate to have raised over $150, 000 through generous support from the community at our 10th Anniversary Dinner Auction in 2002. With this money the NICU was able to purchase state of the art incubators to care for their tiny premature babies.
- Emotional - parents who have been through similar situations are often the best ones to relate to. We have a group of caring parents who have experienced the trauma of having a baby in the NICU, with all the ups and downs, who form our counselling committee. Our counsellors provide a shoulder to cry on and someone to talk to who understands.
- Practical - a clothing pool with tiny clothes specifically hand sewn and knitted for premature babies, a library with useful, informative books and videos for parents to access, an information book regarding the NICU given to all parents when their baby is admitted.
Having a premature baby and spending time in the NICU places an enormous amount of stress on the parents and their families. Many of the babies require ongoing intensive care and are very ill for extended periods of time. They are often living day to day. This roller coaster ride of emotions tests you to the extreme. NNICUPS has proven to be an essential service in alleviating some of the stress and anxiety felt by parents of these very special babies.
